Exploring the Columbia River Gorge
People have told me over and over again-the best thing about Portland is how close it is to everything-the coast, the mountains and the Columbia River Gorge. Two weekends ago, I decided it was time to explore the Gorge!
First stop-Multnomah Falls. It's just a half an hour from my house. The water cascades over a 611 foot cliff. Gorgeous. From there I visited Bonneville Dam and Fish Hatchery. Back when the dam was built it blocked the migration of White Sturgeon (apparently they still spawn below the dam)-in any case-I snapped some pictures of the massive fish at the hatchery. After a quick stop at the dam, it was on to Hood River. It's easy to fall in love with this town. It's so charming-built right up against the Cascades along the Columbia River. The shops and restaurants are darling. Winds whip through the gorge and so Hood River is a hot spot for kite and wind surfers. It looks like a ton of fun-I want to take a lesson!
